KINGSHILL, U.S. Virgin Islands – The Virgin Islands Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve congratulates Dr. Esther Ellis recent recipient of the ESGR Patriot Award.

Dr. Ellis, the Virgin Islands Department of Health territorial epidemiologist was nominated by 1st. Lt. Cosme Harrison who is assigned to the Virgin Islands Army National Guard, Medical Detachment. In his civilian position, Harrison works as a Department of Health Zika Pregnancy Registry Coordinator.

He nominated his civilian employer for her ability to ensure staff is supported when they have military duty.

“Even when the stress is on and deadlines are looming, when I notify that I have National Guard duty, that stress is not expressed at that time,” said Harrison. “Esther Ellis is an extremely busy woman but always makes time to ensure staff is supported when the need to report to duty arises.”

Ellis referenced COL Sally Petty’s remarks as she accepted the award. Petty, the adjutant general’s representative, stated guard members bring several qualities, such as, being educated, accountable, adaptable and focused, to their employer.

“It has truly been an honor to have Cosme Harrison work for the Dept. of Health for the past 5 years,” said Ellis. “I am very happy to support the National Guard. All the things you (Petty) said this morning that they bring to work, is so true of him. We are so proud to have him at the Department of Health.”

Ellis was presented the award during the committee's St. Croix Briefing with the Boss, recently Gertrude’s Restaurant. For 50 years, ESGR has strived to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve.
