ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands – Dr. Irene Guendel, epidemiologist for the Virgin Islands Department of Health, received the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve's Patriot Award during the Virgin Islands St. Thomas Briefing with the Boss recently.
The Virgin Islands Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve State Chair Stanley Jones presented the award at its employer information briefing event held at Victor's New Hideout. The Patriot Award is designed to recognize supervisors and bosses for their support that helps National Guardsmen or Reservists serve our nation.
Dr. Guendel was nominated by 1st Lt. Cosme Harrison who is assigned to the Virgin Islands National Guard, Medical Detachment. In his civilian position, 1st. Lt. Harrison works as a Zika Pregnancy Registry Coordinator. He nominated Guendel for her steadfast commitment to the men and women that serve in the Guard or Reserve Components.

Dr. Irene Guendel is an amazing motivator,” said Harrison. “Recognizing the unique opportunities the National Guard provides, she continually encourages me to seek increased opportunity within the National Guard, motivating me to achieve my goal of supporting the entire Virgin Islands Community.”
In her acceptance remarks Guendel highlighted Harrison’s performance and character.
“Cosme is such an important part of the Dept. of Health and the National Guard,” said Guendel. “I am so thankful that I have crossed paths with someone of that caliber.”
