ESGR in the News

MINNEAPOLIS  –  Sara Johnson, Assistant Dean for Resident and Student Affairs at the University of Minnesota Dental School received the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriotic Employer Award March 15 in a presentation attended by many students and co-workers.

Johnson was nominated for the award by 2nd Lt. Adam Hildebrandt, a 4th year dental student and member of the Minnesota Army National Guard. ESGR Minnesota Volunteer Christie Nixon presented the award.

Adam has been a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard for 2 ½ years and is assigned to the State Surgeon’s office at the Joint Force Headquarters in St. Paul. He will be promoted to captain in the Dental Corps upon his graduation and board certification as a dentist. He has appreciated the opportunity to learn from the Guard’s senior medical professionals as they planned and executed operations for planned and unplanned Guard deployments, including COVID response and civil unrest. He was excited to learn of this opportunity to serve and is looking forward to doing his job full time as a civilian and part time in the military.

Adam attended both the Direct Commissioning Course and Basic Officer Leadership Course during the 2021 school year. He described the prompt, compassionate, and graceful way that Sara arranged for him to complete his coursework off the normal schedule and still be on time for graduation this spring. In his nomination, Adam stated that Sara “focuses on people” and seems to operate from a stance of, “what can I do to make your life easier” for all students.

Sara Johnson has been with the University of Minnesota since 2008. Her value to the program is evident in the way she responds to and finds cooperative solutions for student needs; whether they be military commitments, credentialing for international students/professionals, or other issues. The depth of her commitment is further highlighted by her ongoing work toward a PhD with the university’s Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy and Development, and her published research on academic advising, peer mentorship, and student mental health. She expressed deep appreciation for the nomination, and for those who choose to serve in the military.

ESGR is a Department of Defense program which seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
