MINNEAPOLIS – Nancy Herington, Minneapolis Fire Station 21, accepted the Patriotic Employer award from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Committee member Christie Nixon on behalf of her husband, Fire Captain Ryan Herington.
Ryan attended the ceremony virtually by FaceTime. Herington, captain of Ladder 2, was nominated for the award by Command Sgt. Maj. Nicholas Palmer for Ryan’s support of Palmer’s frequent Army Reserve duty.
Palmer, currently assigned as senior enlisted leader of the 364th Theater Public Affairs Support Element at Ft. Snelling has been a Minneapolis Firefighter for four years, with previous work at St. Cloud and other fire departments. He was also previously full time with the Army Reserve as a Military Technician.
The ceremony was attended by crew members and families of Ladder 2 and Engine 21, including Ryan’s children, Tommy and Sawyer Herington. Battalion Chief Todd Steinhilber represented the Minneapolis Fire Department.
ESGR Committee Member Nixon, who retired from the Minneapolis Fire Department approximately five years ago, recognized the importance of the support of not only the immediate supervisor (Captain Herington), but of the Battalion Chief as prime drivers of daily staffing adjustments.
ESGR is a Department of Defense program which seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
