ESGR in the News

CAMP MURRAY, Wash. – The Washington Army National Guard (WAARNG) held its second Soldier First event with the 898th Brigade Engineering Brigade.  At this event, the Washington Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), while working with its partners at the Joint Services Support (JSS), was asked to support the event.

South Sound Area Co-Chairs Ohad Lowy and Mary Miller got to talk to 200 Soldiers.  “Being invited to participate in events like the Soldier First ensures that we have an opportunity to talk to each Soldier individually about their rights and responsibilities under USERRA, as well as the ESGR awards program,” said Lowy.  “It also helps strengthen our relationship with our partners in the Washington National Guard, like the JSS, by being there to support their events.”

With increasing demands on the WAARNG ranging from deployment abroad to support COVID and other domestic operations both state-wide, and nationally, soldier readiness remains a top priority for the WAARNG.   In fact, it is projected that over the next five years, the WAARNG will train and deploy more Soldiers than in any time since the beginning of the Global War on Terrorism.

In order to accomplish these goals, WAARNG Commander Brig. Gen. Daniel Dent has adopted a “Soldier First” focus on all aspects of the WAARNG’s mission. “As our touchstone, this requires the belief in individual readiness and the connection of each Soldier to the powerful tradition of service in the U.S. Army and our National Guard. Soldier First requires a steadfast commitment to Army Values, standards, and toughness,” said Brig. Gen. Dent.

Taking this model into action, the WAARNG has transformed the Soldier Readiness Processing program into Solider First events, in which administrative drills are held, thereby combining multiple administrative, Army Combat Fitness Tests and medical events into one event, thereby freeing other trainings to focus on training objectives instead of administrative tasks.
