HORSHAM, Pa. – Pennsylvania Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense program, announced the state Freedom Award nomination team selected three companies as semifinalist for the 2022 Secretary of Defense Freedom Award. The semifinalists include small, large private and public sector employers, nominated by a National Guard or Reserve employee in their organization. ESGR received over 2,700 nominations for this prestigious award for employers throughout the 50 states, Guam-CNMI, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and District of Columbia.
Pennsylvania ESGR received nearly100 nominations from service members across the spectrum of Guard and Reserve services. Of those nomination submitted, 51 were selected for a final review in the three business categories: nine small, 26 large and 16 public sector. The final review considers how business interacts and supports service members while meeting their military service members when called to service for weekend drills, additional extended training exercises, military education and during mobilizations. Among the eight subjective evaluation criteria are questions about support of and communications with service members while they are meeting the military obligations, pay and benefits, family support and the company’s commitment to the Uniformed Service Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA).
Each U.S. state, territory and commonwealth is authorized to submit one company nominee to national ESGR as a semifinalist for Freedom Award. This year, state Chair Marty Kuhar and Team Chairman and state Chair Emeritus Wes Craig are pleased to announce the Pennsylvania nominees: Large Business – Fulton Bank in Lancaster, Public Sector – Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority in Philadelphia, and Small Business – Teletracking in Pittsburgh.
ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD. Paramount to ESGR's mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective, and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
