BILLINGS, Mont. – Hal Ostund Jr. of Costco #69 was presented with a Department of Defense Patriot Award in recognition of extraordinary support of his employee serving in the Montana National Guard.
The award was presented by Montana Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) volunteer Brynn Schwarz on behalf of Montana Army National Guard 1st Lieutenant Stephen Bonnecarrere.
Ostund was grateful for his award. Bonnecarrere had spoken to him about the nomination prior to his departure for a deployment. The Patriot Award was given in recognition of Ostund as a “super supervisor who helped him make multiple deployments smoother.”
The Patriot Award was developed by ESGR to publicly recognize civilian employers who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their civilian employees serving in the guard or reserve. Without supportive employers, the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units cannot be maintained.
Bonnecarrere’s nomination reads: “My supervisor Hal Ostund is incredibly supportive of my service commitment to serve both on a federal and state level. In the last year I was federally activated to deploy overseas, and was absent for a duration that exceeded a calendar year. Since being back, I have been afforded the opportunity to go through Supervisor training and was selected to become a supervisor at the completion of my training. At this time, the COVID pandemic was straining resources at the state level. As a result, I was activated to assist critical infrastructure within the state. Due to the severity of the need, I had to give Hal my orders with three days’ notice. Hal was incredibly easy to work with and incredibly supportive of my service. As a prior service member, Hal, a grateful nation thanks you for your service and support and I salute you.”
Congratulations Hal Ostund Jr. of Costco #69 for being supportive civilian employer of our Montana Guard and Reserve. You provide a valuable service to our country by hiring Montana Guard and Reserve members. We applaud your own service and thank you for being an understanding employer.
ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
