ESGR in the News

05

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State Athletics annually offers military personnel, Guard and Reserve members and veterans tickets to attend both a tailgate breakfast at the Bryce Jorden Center (BJC) and a football game at Beaver Stadium.  The Pennsylvania Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense program, attended the Tailgate event at the Bryce Jorden Center Nov. 20.

Terry Curran, Pennsylvania ESGR Ombudsman Director and Michele Vollmer a North Central Area volunteer represented ESGR at a table in the BJC.  They provide Guard and Reserve members with information about ESGR’s employer awards program and USERRA rights and obligations.  Curran and Vollmer also provided information about ESGR’s Employer Outreach Mission to employers attending the event; this outreach opportunity resulted in obtaining 17 Statements of Support.

Vollmer, Associate Dean of Clinics and Experiential Learning Director, is the Director of the veterans and service members Legal Clinic; she joined the ESGR North Central Committee this year. Collaboration with ESGR and the Clinic offers law students an opportunity to learn about USERRA and Ombudsman services; and, it has the potential for expanding Pennsylvania ESGR volunteer membership.

According to Vollmer, the clinic “offers students hands-on experience representing veterans and current service members in some of the unique legal issues they encounter.”  Her ESGR committee membership, intent to become an Ombudsman, and suggestions to recruit law students into the Pennsylvania ESGR committees offers opportunities for state-wide committee growth.

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD. Paramount to ESGR's mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
