ESGR in the News

MIAMI – Ryder System Inc. was presented with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Above and Beyond Award at their Miami Headquarters Sept. 23 for support of their full-time employees who are also National Guard and Reserve members. The award was presented by Michael Mills, ESGR Area Chair.  Accepting the award on behalf of Ryder was CEO Robert Sanchez.

Ryder System was nominated for the prestigious award by recently retired Navy Reservist, Cmdr. Ed Tobon, Senior Director of Talent Acquisition. In his submission, Tobon cited the company’s longstanding commitment to recruiting, hiring, and supporting military reservists and veterans. On the national level, Ryder System, a Fortune 500 company, has been the recipient of several awards and honors for outstanding programs and best practices as a patriotic employer. Several of Ryder’s managers or staff have received ESGR’s Patriot Award since its inception for their support of individual employees serving in the Guard or Reserves.  Promoting financial literacy among veteran and military service members and the “Battle Buddy” program are initiatives demonstrative of Ryder’s commitment. In the latter, current Ryder military employees are paired with newly hired military employees for mentoring and to ease the transition from active duty to civilian life under a professional setting.

The Above and Beyond Award is presented by ESGR State Committees to recognize employers who have gone above and beyond the legal requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act by providing their Guard and Reserve employees additional, non-mandated benefits such as differential or full pay to offset lost wages, extended health benefits, and other similar benefits. The award is given in limited numbers by ESGR State Committees to employers who have had at least one of their supervisors/managers recognized with a Patriot Award, and who have signed or agree to sign an ESGR Statement of Support.

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, was established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers.
