Joint Base Lewis McChord, Wash. – Jim Witwer, project manager with Military Aviation and Commercial Cleaning Services (MACCS), was presented the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot Award by Ohad Lowy, South Sound area co-chair for the Washington ESGR and Kate Lowy, Washington ESGR military outreach coordinator, in recognition of his support he provided his then-employee serving in the Navy Reserve.

Witwer was nominated by Navy Reserve 2nd Class Petty Officer Phirawat Apisit, a former aircraft servicer at MACCS. “Mr. Jim Witwer was very supportive of my Reserve obligations,” said Apisit.  “He was always fair and reasonable and loves to support our troops.  It is my upmost respect for him to receive this award.”

“National Guard and Reserve members bring tremendous skills and capabilities to our workforce, and employer support for their military service is critical to maintaining the strength of our Guard and Reserve units,” said Lowy. “By valuing the military service of their Guard and Reserve employees, employers are directly supporting the readiness and retention of our All-Volunteer Force, and our national defense.”

“To me, it is an honor to be supportive of those reservists who work for us and also take care of us,” said Witwer. “I just think it is real important to support them as we owe them what we have.  Phirawat was a steeler employee and very high caliber.”

ESGR is a Department of Defense program that develops and promotes supportive work environments for service members in the National Guard and Reserve through outreach, recognition, and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws. ESGR also provides assistance in resolving conflicts between Service members and their employers.
