OLYMPIA, Wash. – Tom Hornburg, IT director for the Economic Services Administration (ESA) in Washington State’s Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) was awarded the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot Award recently for the extraordinary support he provides his employee who serves in the Navy Reserve.

The award was presented by Washington ESGR South Sound Area co-Chair Ohad Lowy in a meeting attended by various agency personnel in person and virtually, including the Assistant Secretary David Stillman and Deputy Assistant Secretary Nicole Ross.

Hornburg was nominated for the Patriot Award by Navy Reserve Lt. Joshua Hillsbery, IT security manager at ESA.

“Tom has supported my Reserve time of three years,” said Hillsbery.   “My first assignment after Active Duty was to witk with the commissioned reserve unit.  Tom was very supportive and assisted in time off and time adjustment so that I could support the Navry Reserve unit’s mission.”

“The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees who have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said Lowy.

“By valuing the military service of their Guard and Reserve employees, employers are directly supporting the readiness and retention of our All-Volunteer Force, and our national defense.”

“Receiving the Patriot Award for all the hard work we have done to support our reservists and guard members is a great honor,” said Hornburg. “Here at ESA, we continue to support hiring veterans, reservist, and guard members. Their diverse skills, military training and continued service to our country and citizens is a great benefit to our team.”

ESGR is a Department of Defense program that develops and promotes supportive work environments for service members in the National Guard and Reserve through outreach, recognition, and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws. ESGR also provides assistance in resolving conflicts between Service members and their employers.
