EDINA, Minn. – Denny Schulstad, a 21 year volunteer with Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve in Minnesota (ESGR-MN), a past chair of ESGR-MN, and dedicated volunteer; received the ESGR-National Lifetime Achievement Award June 29.

Thomas Simonet, Minnesota ESGR State Chair, presented the award at Denny's home in Edina Minnesota. Denny Schulstad chaired the ESGR-MN committee for seven years after a successful career with the U.S. Air Force, served on the Minneapolis City Council and led the Minneapolis Aquatennial celebrations.

He has mentored many local young adults in acceptance to the U.S. Air Force Academy. He personally kept in contact with these young adults as they grew in their careers. Denny is a great sounding board to the current leadership of ESGR-MN as we continue to serve our Guard and Reserve families. He is an advocate to protect employers and service members under the guidelines of the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-employment Rights Act (USERRA). Denny Schulstad is an example of the second core value of the US Air Force of 'Service before Self.

Denny was involved with the military in many ways. He is a retired Air Force Brigadier General; a member of the Air Force Chief of Staff Civic Leader Group; co-founder and President of the Minnesotans’ Military Appreciation Fund which has raised $19 million and given 18,000 letters of appreciation and grants of $500 up to $10,000 to Active, Guard and Reserve members from Minnesota who have served in a combat area after 9-11; an advisor and board member of the Falcon Foundation for the Air Force Academy; and he has given 30 to 40 speeches each year about military matters. In civilian life, he was the National President of the 63,000-member University of Minnesota Alumni Association. Also he was the Minneapolis Aquatennial Commodore and President. He is a former president of the Airport Foundation for MSP airport. He has served on several non-profit boards and commissions.
