LINCOLN, Neb. – University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Local Technical Assistance Program director, Mitch Doht, and office manager Phyllis Schwab, were recently presented with Department of Defense Patriot Awards.

Bruce Wood, a volunteer representing the Nebraska Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, and Nebraska Army National Guard Deputy Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Richard Dahlman presented the awards at UNL.

Doht and Schwab were nominated for being highly supportive of Nicole Veys, spouse of Nebraska Army National Guardsman Maj. Greg Veys. The Veys write, “Mitch Doht and Phyllis Schwab provided excellent support and flexibility to Nicole while her husband was mobilized for 15 months away from home.  They provided flexible work schedules and allowed leave periods to complete child care and medical appointments.”

“The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said Woods in his presentation.  “Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units, and it’s a pleasure for us to recognize Mr. Doht and Ms. Schwab with these awards.”

Following the award presentation, Dave Varner, Interim Dean for Extension, signed a Statement of Support on behalf of UNL Nebraska Extension, publicly acknowledging support for all National Guard and Reserve service members.

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.  For more information about ESGR outreach programs or volunteer opportunities, visit www.ESGR.mil.
