PHILADELPHIA – Pennsylvania Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense program, announced that Jon Baker of Cintas in West Philadelphia recently received a Patriot Award in recognition of extraordinary support of employees serving in the Pennsylvania Guard and Reserve.
Baker was nominated for the Patriot Award by Sgt. Shontai Haley who is a member of A Company, 1-111th Infantry, an element of the Pennsylvania National Guard 56th Stryker Brigade.
Wes Craig, Southeast Area Chair and State Chair Emeritus presented the award to Baker and said, “The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve.”
Craig noted that Haley was activated twice in 12 months for 10 day deployments for riot control and COVID-19 support in Philadelphia; each time he was only able to provide Baker with a 12 hour notice of his mobilization. Craig also mentioned that Haley was unable to attend the Patriot Award presentation because he is currently on annual training which will be followed by attendance at a two week Non Commissioned Officer school.
In nominating Baker for the Patriot Award, Haley stated: “During all the times I’ve been away from work I continued to get great support from Mr. Baker. My coworkers immediately covered my responsibilities while deployed and warmly welcomed me back after each time.” After receiving the award, Baker said, “Cintas is looking for more young people like Sgt. Haley; the Guard and Reserve is a great place to find individuals that are leaders, professional, responsible, on time, and self-starters that can work with a diverse work force.”
ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD. Paramount to ESGR's mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
