ESGR in the News

CONCORD, N.H. – New Hampshire State Hospital supervisors Donna Ferland and Joseph Caristi received the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Patriot Award recently for the extraordinary support they provided their employee Master Sgt. Daniel Rinden who serves in the New Hampshire Air National Guard.

“The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees who have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said New Hampshire ESGR vice Chair Jim Moody. “Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units.”

“National Guard and Reserve members bring tremendous skills and capabilities to our workforce, and employer support for their military service is critical to maintaining the strength of our Guard and Reserve units,” said Moody. “By valuing the military service of their Guard and Reserve employees, employers are directly supporting the readiness and retention of our All-Volunteer Force, and our national defense.”

Rinden was placed on COVID support orders with the National Guard and was only able to give a one day notice to the hospital. His orders were originally for two and a half months, but were ultimately extended by another five months.  His employer not only covered his absence, but when Rinden suggested that he would talk to his commander about coming off of his orders early because of the burden on his employer, his supervisors insisted he stay on his orders because of the importance to the State of New Hampshire to get COVID vaccines safely distributed.

ESGR is a Department of Defense program that develops and promotes supportive work environments for service members in the National Guard and Reserve through outreach, recognition, and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws. ESGR also provides assistance in resolving conflicts between Service members and their employers.
