YAKIMA, Wash. – Samuel Briggs, Supervisory Special Agent of Homeland Security Investigations, was presented with a Patriot Award, by Jon Ison, west central area chair for the Washington Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Committee, and Yolanda Orozco, employer outreach representatives for the Washington ESGR, in recognition of his support of his employees who serve in the Reserve Components.

Briggs was nominated by Navy Reserve Ensign Diana Gomez-Martinez a mission support specialist at HSI.   “Samuel Briggs has been extremely supportive of my duties for completing my required drills, annual training and Military Funeral Honors,” said Gomez-Martinez.” His support and willingness to give flexibility has allowed me to support my unit and have a successful career path.”

“The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said Ison. “Our Guard and Reserve members could not perform their military duty without knowing their civilian employer supports them 100 percent.”

Briggs signed an ESGR Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve, joining employers since 1972 in pledging active support and encouragement to Reserve Component employees who serve.  The Statement of Support pledges:

We fully recognize, honor and comply with the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-Employment Rights Act (USERRA).

We will provide our managers and supervisors with the tools they need to effectively manage employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.

We appreciate the values, leadership and unique skills service members bring to the workforce and will encourage opportunities to hire Guardsmen, Reservists and Veterans.

We will continually recognize and support our country’s service members and their families, in peace, in crises and in war.

“By meeting the Statement of Support criteria, Homeland Security Investigations pledges to stand proudly with its Guard and Reserve employees, who continue to answer their nation’s call to support our communities at home and critical missions throughout the world.  Their sacrifices are essential to the strength of our nation.”

“As a veteran myself I do my best to ensure those who volunteer in the armed services can conduct their duties as required knowing they have the full support of their day job,” said Brigg. “I am humbled by the award and will hang the statement of support in our office.”

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
