ESGR in the News

RICHLAND, Wash. – Civilian employer support is vital to reservists and guardsman.  Civilian employers who encourage a culture of supporting reservists and guardsman make sure that it is not a singular effort by just a direct supervisor, but that there is a team of supervisors and employees supporting those who serve.

In recognition of such a team effort, Bob Runkle, Diana Van Pelt, Kerrie Rohlfing, and Cindy Henderson, all of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory received the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Patriot Awards for the extraordinary support they provide their employee Washington Army National Guardsman Sgt. 1st Class Keithan Rogers.  The Patriot Awards were presented in a virtual ceremony by Washington Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve East Central Area Chair Judith West.

“The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees who have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said West. “Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units.”

Being a supportive employer, in addition to providing morale support, includes insuring that processes are followed so that the service member and their family do not have to worry about such things as payroll and benefits.

“Van Pelt quickly processed my salary matches so that my family did not need to worry financially about me being deployed,” said Rogers. “She [Kerrie Rohlfing] continually checks in with me to see that my benefits are disbursed properly. She made sure that I was properly promoted while I was deployed.”

“National Guard and Reserve members bring tremendous skills and capabilities to our workforce, and employer support for their military service is critical to maintaining the strength of our Guard and Reserve units,” said West. “By valuing the military service of their Guard and Reserve employees, employers are directly supporting the readiness and retention of our All-Volunteer Force, and our national defense.”

“Bob is my division manager and is a great advocate of the Employee's Veterans Group. He supports me as I co-run this group to help veterans and those serving,” said Rogers. “Cindy checks with me and my family to make sure everyone knows what is going on. She makes sure my work is covered.”

ESGR is a Department of Defense program that develops and promotes supportive work environments for service members in the National Guard and Reserve through outreach, recognition, and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws. ESGR also provides assistance in resolving conflicts between Service members and their employers.
