SEATTLE – Ed Stewart, manager at the Federal Aviation Administration’s Law Enforcement Assistance Program (LEAP) in Seattle, was presented with a Patriot Award Feb. 8 by Larry Kirchner, military outreach representative for the Washington Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, in recognition of his extraordinary support of an employee who serves in the Washington Army National Guard in a virtual presentation.

Stewart was nominated by Washington Army National Guardsman 1st Sgt. Michael Lizarraga, an investigator for FAA’s LEAP in his civilian career, for his support of his military service. “The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said Kirchner. “Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units.”

Lizarraga expressed his appreciation for the support and accommodation provided by Stewart and the LEAP staff, citing their support and understanding of his reserve military duties. “Mr. Stewart, a 32-year veteran of the Air Force, understands my military duties and is supportive of my National Guard career,” said Lizarraga.  “His flexibility and understanding makes my life much easier and alleviates many of the stressors of coming and going from civilian to military duty.”

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
