TACOMA, Wash. – Training Coordinator Donald Brown of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department Corrections Bureau received the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Patriot Award recently for the extraordinary support he provides his employee Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Jungeun Kim who works as a Corrections Deputy in her civilian job.

The virtual award presentation was facilitated by ESGR South Sound Area Co-Chair Ohad Lowy. “The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees who have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said Lowy.  “By valuing the military service of their Guard and Reserve employees, employers are directly supporting the readiness and retention of our All-Volunteer Force, and our national defense.”

Correctional Capt. Brian Sutherlin highlighted the beneficial relationship between first responder employers and their employees who service in the Reserve Components.  “People who come from the military or the Guard and Reserve are a great fit to work around here,” said Sutherlin. “They are very easy to integrate into this line of work.”

“Thank you; I am humbled and appreciate,” said Brown.  “Deputy Kim is an awesome asset to the Department and we are excited to have her. As a retired military veteran of 20 years in the Air Force I am always happy to help those who serve.”

ESGR is a Department of Defense program that develops and promotes supportive work environments for service members in the National Guard and Reserve through outreach, recognition, and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws.
