GULF BREEZE, Fla. - During a busy 7 a.m. shift change in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Baptist Health Care, nurse Jena Schultz was presented with a Department of Defense Patriot Award.
The virtual ceremony was presided over by Area Chair Tim Lambert, of the Florida Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve in recognition of her extraordinary support of one of her employees, U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. Justin Lee who has been deployed.
In the request for her award, Lee expressed “In my first three months of employment, Baptist Health Care and Jena allowed me to leave within 72 hours of being activated for the COVID fight. This meant so much to me because my job there was already critical because of COVID, and we were short staffed which placed even more work on our Team. That mission was canceled, and I returned to work two and a half weeks later from San Diego.”
Lee went on to say, “Just two months later I was activated again and had to leave with only 72 hours’ notice. I’ll be gone for a year on this mission. I have inconvenienced my employer and our team greatly yet they are still so supportive of me. They still include me on the group chat and check on me regularly. This is quite impressive because I had only been employed with Baptist for a few months.”
“The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered the Nation’s call to serve,” said Lambert. “Jena Schutz was nominated for being highly supportive of Sgt. Lee and supportive managers are absolutely critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of Guard and Reserve units.”
ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
