ORELAND, Pa. –Pennsylvania Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense program, announced today Wesley (Wes) Craig was honored with a Secretary of Defense Exceptional Civilian Service Award.  This award was established to recognize civilians who have distinguished themselves by exceptional service to the Secretary of Defense or a Component within the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD).  It is the highest level civilian career medal award within the OSD.

The citation that accompanied the Medal reads in part: “His exceptional leadership, dedication, and commitment to the mission of the Pennsylvania Committee significantly enhanced and sustained employer support for the men and woman serving in the United States Armed Forces Guard and Reserve.  Mr. Craig’s performance and initiative were the driving force behind significant improvements to the essential Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve programs of Employer Outreach, Military Outreach, and Ombudsman Services. … he routinely went above and beyond the requirements of his position … The distinctive accomplishments of Mr. Craig reflect great credit upon himself and the Department of Defense.”

Wes joined ESGR in 2007 and has served as Southeast Pennsylvania Regional/Area Chair, State Military Outreach Director, and two terms as the State Chair before assuming the title of Chair Emeritus.  He is once again assuming the duties of Southeast Pennsylvania Regional/Area Chair and State Military Outreach Director.

Upon receiving the award, Wes stated: “I am humbled to receive this award. The hard working 90 volunteers of the Pennsylvania ESGR are what have really made a difference over the last three years.  We touched over 1,000 employers in our state and helped them appreciate the military service of their employees. We briefed thousands of troops, explained the protections afforded to them under the USERRA law, and assisted in their successful reintegration to the civilian workplace after long periods of training or overseas deployments.  It has been a pleasure to work to strengthen the bonds between the military and civilian worlds.”

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD. Paramount to ESGR's mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
