CAMP MURRY, Wash. – The Washington Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) committee, a Department of Defense program, is pleased to announce the selection and swearing in, of Phil Sanders, as the new ESGR Chair for Washington.
The State Chair is an official Department of Defense volunteer position with a three-year term of service, renewable one time. Sanders will serve under U.S. Navy Capt. Robbie Underhill, ESGR's Executive Director. He took his oath of office on Sept. 23, and started in his role Oct 1.
Sanders will provide the leadership and vision for a team of dedicated volunteers throughout Washington to carry out the ESGR mission.
“Our team has had the great fortune to have Phil as our Vice Chair for the past several years. He is a strong compassionate leader. Phil is the right person at the right time to lead this organization during this very challenging time. I know under his leadership Washington men and women in uniform will continue to receive the best support our country can provide,” said former Washington ESGR State Chair John Patterson.
Sanders, a U.S. Army veteran, had served 4 years in active duty, including service in Vietnam. Sanders joined the Washington Committee in Feb. 2010, serving as Employer Outreach Representative, Training Director, most recently as the King County Area Chair and state Vice-Chair. He brings with him over 30 years in public service.
“I am humbled and honored to be selected as State Chair for the Washington ESGR committee,” said Sanders. “I look forward to working with our outstanding volunteers to continue serving the Reserve Component service members and their families as well as educating and rewarding their employers for their exceptional support.”
With nearly forty percent of the United States’ military force serving in the Guard or Reserve, Philip Sanders will have a direct impact on these men and women, and their civilian employers. He joins 53 other chairs who oversee the ESGR mission in the 50 states, three territories, and the District of Columbia.
ESGR is a Department of Defense program that develops and promotes supportive work environments for service members in the National Guard and Reserve through outreach, recognition, and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws. ESGR also provides assistance in resolving conflicts between service members and their employers.
