RENTON, Wash. – Seth Knapp, district manager at Safeway-Albertsons Company in Renton, was presented with a Patriot Award Feb. 28 by Phil Sanders, vice chair for the Washington State Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Committee, in recognition of her extraordinary support of an employee who serves in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

Knapp was nominated by Cpl. Christian Doll, grocery manager at Safeway-Albertsons Company, for Knapp’s support of his military service with the United States Marine Reserve. “The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said Sanders. “Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units.”

Doll expressed his appreciation for the support and accommodation provided by Knapp and his fellow co-workers. “My supervisor encouraged me to apply for a promotion with full knowledge that I was possibly deploying. The promotion was based, in no way, on time in or mandatory. There were many eligible candidates and still I was chosen.” Doll stated. “My employer has ensured I always get my time off for drill and AT and even additional duty days when we have been given little notice. My employer has shown exceptional support for our military and for our careers despite knowing it would put hardship upon his stores and himself to be without me in my position.”

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
