HICKORY RUN, Pa. – Pennsylvania Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense program, announced that Hickory Run State Park Rangers Darren Kramer and Mark Scarpitti were honored Nov. 6 with Patriot Awards in recognition of their exceptional support of employees serving in the Pennsylvania Guard and Reserves.

Scarpitti and Kramer were nominated for the Patriot Award by Spc. Justine Armanini who serves as a veterinarian specialist with a U.S. Army Reserve unit at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

According to Roslyn Schroeder Pennsylvania East Central Area ESGR volunteer, “the Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve.

In the Patriot Award nomination, Armanini stated in part: (of Kramer) “My Chief Ranger has gone above and beyond in making accommodations for my service in the Army Reserve.  When a position opened up for promotion, he encouraged me to apply for the position even though he knew that my service would prevent me from performing that duty for nearly 2 years. … On several occasions, he rearranged shifts to allow me to perform both duties without losing any time at work.”

In speaking of Scarpitti, Armanini said, “As an assistant manager, he is very supportive of my duties in the Army Reserve.  He realizes that the Army Reserve can be stressful and take up a lot of my time, but that never stopped him from allowing me to do extra duties as a park ranger.”

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within the Department of Defense. Paramount to ESGR's mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
