  • City of Tacoma Environmental Services supervisor receives Department of Defense Patriot Award

TACOMA, Wash. – Hugh Messer, operations and maintenance division manager of the City of Tacoma Environmental Services was presented with a Patriot Award Aug. 21 by Ohad Lowy, military outreach director, and Wayne Hilton, south sound area chair for the Washington Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) in recognition of extraordinary support of his employee serving in the Navy Reserve.

Messer was nominated by Navy Reserve Petty Officer 1st Class Josiah Rowell.  “Hugh has always been supportive of my dedication to serve,” said Rowell.  “Furthermore, Hugh has recognized and placed a great deal of value of my background and expertise that has resulted from my service with the United States Navy.  I appreciate Hugh’s understanding and support.  His outstanding support enables me to fully support Submarine Group Nine, providing protection to strategic assets that are vital to our National defense and security.”

“The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said Lowy. “Our Guard and Reserve members could not perform their military duty without knowing their civilian employer supports them 100 percent. Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units.”

“As a military veteran, I understand how important it is to support our military personnel both active, Guard and Reserves,” said Messer. “I am very honored to receive the Patriotic Employer Award but would like to acknowledge my employer, the City of Tacoma. The City’s backing provides me the tools and policies that encourage not just me, but all supervisors and managers to be creative in ways that allow reserves to perform their scheduled duties. It is my honor to do what I can do to help.”

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
