HONOLULU – Hawaii employers were recognized for tremendous support of their employees serving in the Guard and Reserve July 17 at Pomaika’i Ballrooms. Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) state chair, Robert Lee, presented Patriot Awards to various supervisors, Above and Beyond award to Legacy Hilo and Pro Patria award to Otis Elevator.

The Patriot Award is the first in ESGR’s series of awards. An employee serving in the National Guard or Reserve, or the spouse of a Guard or Reserve member, may nominate individual supervisors and bosses for support provided directly to the nominating service member and his or her family.

The Above and Beyond award honors employers of reserve component members who go above and beyond the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) requirements such as continuation of benefits, providing pay differential and assisting with childcare.

The Pro Patria award is presented annually by each ESGR state committee to one small, one large and one public sector employer in their state or territory. It is the highest level award that may be bestowed by an ESGR state committee. Recipients have demonstrated the greatest support to Guard and Reserve employees through their leadership and practices, including adopting personnel policies that make it easier for employees to participate in the National Guard and Reserve.

In attendance were recipients and their guests, nominators, ESGR volunteers and commanders or their representatives from the National Guard and Reserves.

ESGR seeks to foster a culture where all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD. Furthermore, ESGR encourages the employment of Guardsmen and Reservists as they bring integrity, a global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
