WASHINGTON – It’s time to break the internet with accolades and kudos for the most supportive employer out there!  Only thirty-one days remain to nominate your employer for the 2019 Freedom Award!

Does your employer offer you the flexibility you need to succeed both at work and in the military? Does your employer help you to deploy and transition back to work without concern? If you answered "Yes," consider nominating your employer for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.

Here are some examples of what made the 2018 Freedom Award recipients special:

One of the 2018 recipients of the Freedom Award is a large American freight carrier and transportation company. This company initiated an apprenticeship program creating a direct employment pathway for National Guardsmen, Reservists, veterans and spouses that provides fast-track schooling and driving experience. The company has hired more than 10,000 veterans, military members, and veteran spouses.

While a small police department’s nominator was activated to support the Virgin Islands hurricane relief efforts, his home caught fire. The department responded immediately to support the family. After placing the family into temporary housing, the department spearheaded fundraising efforts to get them back on their feet. This public sector employer was also a 2018 recipient of the Freedom Award.

These are stories from just a couple of the employers who received the Department of Defense’s highest employer award. In 2018, more than 2,000 organizations were nominated by their Guard and Reserve employees. Fifteen outstanding employers became recipients. 

Nominations for the Freedom Award must come from a Guard or Reserve service member, or their family members, employed by the organization they are nominating.  Service members nominate large and small employers from a broad cross-section of America, including health, transportation, hospitality, entertainment, banking, service, and security, as well as from federal, state, and local government agencies.
