ESGR in the News

WASHINGTONPresident Donald J. Trump signed a proclamation declaring Aug. 19 – 25, as National Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Week. The week recognizes the important contributions employers continue to make supporting the military service of their National Guard and Reserve employees.

The President stated, “Since the founding of our great Nation, citizens have put their lives on hold to defend our liberty and protect their fellow Americans.  Today, more than one million Americans proudly serve in the National Guard and Reserve.  During National Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Week, we take a moment to salute the employers and communities that support our citizen Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen.”

Emphasizing the critical support employers provide, the President continued, “We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the employers nationwide who understand the importance of a strong and ready military.  Offices, organizations, and businesses nationwide accept the inconveniences of disruptive schedules, temporary personnel shortages, and financial burdens, because they know that they are helping sustain and advance something far more valuable than their bottom lines.”

The week’s events culminate with the 23rd annual Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award ceremony Aug. 24. The ceremony takes place at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.  The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) will formally recognize the 15 employers who were named recipients of this year’s Freedom Award.

The 2018 recipients were selected from more than 2,350 nominations received from Guardsmen and Reservists highlighting how their civilian employers went far beyond what the federal law requires to support them. The Freedom Award began in 1996 under the auspices of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve to recognize exceptional employer support, with 250 honorees to date.
