BRIGHTON, Mich - ESGR Volunteer Fred Kaiser presented ESGR Patriot Awards to supportive supervisors at the Michigan State Police Brighton Post on 2 December.
1st Lieutenant Michael Sura and Sergeant Robert Mossing were nominated by Sgt. Michael Twietmeyer, USMCR who stated, “Sgt. Robert Mossing has been my supervisor since I was hired into the Michigan State Police (MSP) in 2017 (working seven-plus years together). During my time with MSP, I have been receptive to the challenges faced by law enforcement today. Being near the end of his career, Sgt. Mossing has guided and led me to achieve high goals both in my career and personal life while mentoring me along the way. He is currently the scheduling Sergeant (of over thirty employees – Troopers/Sergeants/Civilians), Tactical Bike Team (TBT) Sergeant, and oversees a patrol area of over 1500 square miles and always stays available for any Trooper on and off shift. Sgt. Mossing has been flexible and encouraging of my growth in my Marine Copes career being a veteran himself. He understands the stress and struggles of balancing both careers and being successful.
His communication is unmatched and will always find the answer to any problem that may arise. He supports his subordinates, peers, and echelon of leaders as if they were his own family and never lets them down. Before deploying again, Sgt. Mossing ensured I had adequate time to take care of family matters and advocated on my behalf to ensure all MSP-related matters were handled. During my time away (since February, 2024-present), Sgt. Mossing has taken care of my personal belongings and residence as it was going to sit vacant with no caretaker. During my deployment, he has continued to check in on my fiancée and family back in Michigan.
He continues to set the example and what it means to be a leader, mentor, and friend. As he gets closer to retirement (June 2025), the MSP will have large shoes to fill. In closing, I would like to recommend Sgt. Mossing for a higher level of an award as he should be recognized for his sacrifice to those around him."
Sgt. Mossing was also nominated by Army National Guard First Lieutenant Douglas Ryan who stated, “Sgt. Robert Mossing is the scheduling sergeant at the Michigan State Police Brighton Post. He coordinates the schedule for troopers, sergeants, and support staff. When I send him my military leave dates, he puts them on the schedule immediately. As a veteran himself, Sgt. Mossing knows what it means to serve. He is supportive of my service and the service of other reserve component service members at our worksite. We do our best with low staffing on road patrol, but when reserve component service members have military leave, Sgt. Mossing makes things work in our absence without burdening the servicemembers. When I was deployed to the Middle East for nine months, Sgt. Mossing checked in on me to keep a line of communication open. I missed my civilian job, so he kept me in touch.”
