HARRISBURG – Pa. Pennsylvania Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an office of the Department of Defense, announced that Sysco Central Pennsylvania recently received a Seven Seals Award in recognition of extraordinary support of employees serving in the Guard and Reserve.

Pennsylvania ESGR is particularly proud to present employers with a Seven Seals Award for their strong support of their employees serving in our nation’s Reserve forces.

According to James Astor ESGR South-Central Area Chair, “The Seven Seals Award is the broadest and most inclusive award given by ESGR and is presented at the discretion of the State Chair or by ESGR senior leadership. The award is presented in recognition of significant individual or organizational achievement, initiative, or support that promotes and supports the ESGR mission.”

Sysco Central Pennsylvania was nominated for the 2024 Secretary of Defense Freedom Award by Command Sgt. Maj. Cory Heisey of the 228th Transportation Battalion stationed at Fort Indiantown Gap in Annville, Pennsylvania. As a result of that nomination, Pennsylvania State Chair Marty Kuhar awarded the company with a Seven Seals Award. Heisey is also the Vice President of Operations for Sysco Central Pennsylvania.

Astor presented the Seven Seals Award to Heisey. In presenting the award, Astor commented: “It’s critical and an honor to recognize and pay tribute to those employers that hire and support our Guard and Reserve forces. It would be difficult for those in the uniformed services to perform their mission without employer support.” Astor added: “Today’s members of the Guard and Reserves are highly trained and skilled; they bring integrity, a global perspective and, proven leadership to the civilian workforce.”

In addition to presenting a Seven Seals Award, Astor obtained a Statement of Support from Heisey. The Statement of Support confirms that the Sysco Central Pennsylvania joins other employers in pledging:
• We fully recognize, honor, and comply with the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-Employment Rights Act (USERRA).
• We will provide our managers and supervisors with the tools they need to effectively manage employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.
• We appreciate the values, leadership and unique skills service members bring to the workforce and will encourage opportunities to hire Guardsmen, Reservists and Veterans.
• We will continually recognize and support our country’s service members and their families, in peace, in crises and in war.

“Today, supportive employers are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units,” said Astor. “I am asking all South-Central Pennsylvania employers to take a look at their current human resources policies to incorporate policies supportive of Guard and Reserve employees.” Many Pennsylvania employers provide support above and beyond their legal requirements by law by offering pay-differential to offset the loss of wages, and extension of health care benefits, which complement coverage provided by the military, when their employees mobilize.”

Sysco Central Pennsylvania joins a cadre of Fortune 500 companies, state and federal, agencies and thousands of America’s employers in demonstrating support for our armed forces. Astor added: “By signing the Statement of Support, Sysco Central Pennsylvania is sending a clear message to its employees that while they are serving their country, they do not have to worry about their civilian jobs.”
