VIRGINIA, Minn. – Army National Guard Spc. Kassy Slowinski nominated Virginia Police supervisor Nicole Young-Mattson for an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot award. Presenting the Patriot Award was ESGR Region II Chair Frederick Godec.

The award was given Dec. 1 1in the Virginia Police Department office in recognition of Nicole's support of her employee's service to the United States Army National Guard. Kassy was very appreciative of Nicole's support and assistance with her service and her Army Guard deployment and wanted to honor Nicole.

Kassy stated that she wanted to celebrate Nicole's professionalism, patriotism, and dedication to supporting service members nationwide. She appreciated her support, and ongoing flexibility. Being a soldier in the United States Army Guard sometimes requires Kassy to report for duty with little to no notice, and she always received Nicole's unwavering support. Not only is she flexible with her schedule, but she takes an active interest in her service. She frequently asks her about her duties, and about some of her military experiences.

Also present was Frederick J. Godec, an ESGR Minnesota Committee member. ESGR is a Department of Defense office that develops and promotes supportive work environments for service members in the National Guard and Reserve through outreach, recognition, and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws. ESGR also provides assistance in resolving conflicts between Service members and their employers. This year, ESGR celebrates 51 years of excellence in support of the Reserve Components and their civilian employers.
