ESGR in the News

WEXFORD, Pa. – Pennsylvania Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense office, announced that University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Children’s Community Pediatrics supervisor recently received the Patriot Award in recognition of extraordinary support of employees serving in the Pennsylvania Guard and Reserve.

UPMC’s Children’s Community Pediatrics Supervisor Sharon Wardlaw was nominated for the Patriot Award by Lisa Spisak who is the spouse of Chief Master Sgt. Spisak of the 171st Air Refueling Wing of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard located in Pittsburgh.

In nominating Wardlaw, Lisa Spisak stated in part: “My supervisor has gone above and beyond to provide support to me during my husband’s deployments. She is attentive to my family needs and encourages activities that support work/life balance… she supports them even when it means she may have to pick up extra work during her employee’s absence. She has especially gone above and beyond to grant me personal extended leave so I may accompany and support my military spouse and volunteer during his next overseas deployment. She had no obligation to allow for leave beyond a normal vacation week, and certainly did not have to allow for an extended leave and agree to hold my position for when I return. The support and sacrifice she embodies is admirable, exemplary, and worthy of appreciation and recognition.”

Nicholas Krawec, Pennsylvania ESGR Southwest Volunteer, presented the Patriot Award to Wardlaw. In presenting the award, Krawec commented: “I know first-hand how critical it is to pay tribute to those companies and employers that hire and support our Guard and Reserve forces.”

ESGR, a Department of Defense office, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD. Paramount to ESGR's mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective, and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
