ESGR in the News


MONTICELLO, Minn. – Lt. Cmdr. Tyler Turpin, U.S. Navy Reserve, presented the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot Award to his employment supervisor, Matt Brunner, Xcel Energy Operations Support Manager.

The award was presented June 22 at the Xcel Energy Monticello Nuclear Power Plant in recognition of Brunner’s support of his employee's service to the Navy Reserve.

Turpin was very appreciative of Brunner’s support and assistance with his Navy deployments and wanted to honor Matt Brunner.

“Xcel Energy is a great place for members of the Guard and Reserve to work directly as a result of their leaders fully supporting them as they fulfill their missions,” said Turpin. “Matt embodies these values during day to day operations and through his hiring practices. As a new hire I had to nearly immediately leave multiple times for duty. Right away Matt provided help and guidance as I was away, supporting my job at Xcel and all communications with HR. This type of quick supportive response allows us to do our “other” job to its fullest, while maintaining a rewarding career back home.”

Brunner stated, “Veterans are critical to operating a commercial nuclear facility. The background developed in the military and understanding of their responsibility to the well-being of the public is something that you know you can count on from a veteran. I echo our CEOs belief that “Veterans bring all the right stuff to the job: leadership, teamwork, and dedication.” Without these skills, my department and our company would not be successful. I have hired and will continue to hire many veterans as their contribution to the company cannot be understated.”

Among the persons present to share in the awards ceremony were many veterans and they were invited to be in the photograph below.

In addition to being presented a Patriot Award Matt Brunner signed an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Statement of Support, confirming that the company joins other employers in pledging:

  • We fully recognize, honor, and comply with the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-Employment Rights Act (USERRA).
  • We will provide our managers and supervisors with the tools they need to effectively manage employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.
  • We appreciate the values, leadership and unique skills service members bring to the workforce and will encourage opportunities to hire Guardsmen, Reservists and Veterans.
  • We will continually recognize and support our countrys service members and their families, in peace, in crises and in war.

Also present was Robert Adams, an ESGR Ombudsman/Minnesota Committee member. ESGR is a Department of Defense office that develops and promotes supportive work environments for service members in the National Guard and Reserve through outreach, recognition, and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws. ESGR also provides assistance in resolving conflicts between Service members and their employers. This year, ESGR celebrates 51 years of excellence in support of the Reserve Components and their civilian employers.
