ESGR in the News

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Sgt. Tharan Koen is presenting the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot Award to his employment supervisor, Tom Macnally with Performance Pools & Spas. This award was given June 6 at Performance Pools & Spas in Burnsville.

Macnally received the award in recognition of his support of Koen’s service with the Minnesota Army National Guard. Koen appreciated his supervisor’s support of his unit drill assemblies and annual training deployments and wanted to honor Macnally.

Koen stated, “Tom Macnally is an excellent supervisor who strongly supports me and my military service. Tom is the retail manager for our company and has been very flexible with my hours, even offering resources to assist his employees. He never asks a second question when I inform him that I need to miss work for a military conflict that impacts Performance Pools and Spas.”

In addition, Koen stated the following support by his employment supervisor:

  • His accommodation for drill weekends, Tom helps facilitate hour distribution and paid leave to ensure we keep our full-time hours/pay.
  • Tom allows employees in the MNARNG to conduct any online training/mandatory classes needed for the soldier and unit readiness during normal work hours to ensure we are stable in both fields.
  • He maintains a flexible schedule and open mind when it comes to sudden active guard orders or regular M-Day orders so that way we can leave on a moment’s notice with no stress about leaving our locations short staffed.
  • Tom is certain to give soldiers working with Performance Pools and Spas recognition of service throughout the company.
  • His understanding that soldiers regardless of what MOS, all have different experiences while serving in the MNARNG, and sometimes those experiences can lead to hardships mentally or physically. Tom does not hesitate to allow soldiers ample time to get back on their feet and seek out the treatment necessary with no worry or stress that it would affect the Soldier’s employment within the company. By giving soldiers resources offered through the company or taking a minute to sit down with a soldier and offer advice one on one to establish a safe work environment.

Tom Haugo, an ESGR Minnesota Committee member, processed this story.

In addition to presenting a Patriot Award, Performance Pools & Spas signed an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Statement of Support, confirming that the company joins other employers in pledging:

  • We fully recognize, honor, and comply with the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-Employment Rights Act (USERRA).
  • We will provide our managers and supervisors with the tools they need to effectively manage employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.
  • We appreciate the values, leadership and unique skills service members bring to the workforce and will encourage opportunities to hire Guardsmen, Reservists and Veterans.
  • We will continually recognize and support our country’s service members and their families, in peace, in crises and in war.
