PITTSBURGH – Pennsylvania Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense program, announced that University of Pittsburgh Director of the Health Sciences Research IT department recently received a Patriot Award in recognition of extraordinary support of employees serving in the Pennsylvania Guard and Reserve.

Pennsylvania ESGR is particularly proud to present employers with a Patriot Award for their strong support of their employees serving in our nation’s Reserve forces during ESGR’s 50th Anniversary year.

Health Sciences Research IT Director Daniel Ricketts was nominated for the Patriot Award by Cpt. Jasmine Adamiak, of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard’s 171st Air Refueling Wing in Coraopolis. In nominating Ricketts, Adamiak stated, in part: “I would like to recognize my supervisor Daniel Rickets on exceptional leadership and support for the Military. Dan has been instrumental in his role for several years at the University of Pittsburgh and continues to display his leadership through the ability to mentor his staff, motivate our team, and understanding the necessity and requirements of Military service. Dan has never treated me differently from other employees because of my Military service and he remains flexible even at a moment’s notice. I was deployed almost all last year and he remained supportive prior to my deployment and when I returned. When I came back into my position, it was a seamless transition. He made me feel so welcomed and everyone was happy to have me back. I was met with kindness and appreciation… The University of Pittsburgh is a Military friendly organization and Dan adheres to that. Dan is more than deserving of this award and higher recognition!”

Nicholas Krawec, Pennsylvania Area ESGR South West Area volunteer, presented the Patriot Award to Ricketts. In presenting the award, Krawec commented: “It’s critical and an honor to recognize and pay tribute to those employers that hire and support our Guard and Reserve forces. It would be difficult for those in the uniformed services to perform their mission without employer support.”

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD. Paramount to ESGR's mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
