ESGR in the News

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The YMCA of the North held a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Proclamation Ceremony at their 1761 University Avenue West location May 16.

It was the 80th Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Certification in Minnesota to date.  Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar gave an inspiring video message, as she was in session in Washington, to an audience of approximately 150 people. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz offered a glowing tribute to the YMCA's many service member family programs. He noted that he is an active member of that YMCA and presented his own State Proclamation.

Retired Brig. Gen. Sandra Best presented the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Proclamation. She is the first female general in the Minnesota National Guard. YMCA of the North President and CEO Glen Gunderson accepted both Proclamations for his 37 locations. He outlined the many military family programs offered and praised their 27 military employees as well as the Mid Country Bank for being a primary donor. He noted that the first recorded YMCA action supporting the military was during the Civil War in 1861.  That support has continued and has expanded ever since.

YMCA CEO Glen Gunderson signed an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Statement of Support document in the presence of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Jack J Grams, Minnesota ESGR director of awards and ombudsman volunteer.

The Statement of Support confirms that the YMCA of the North joins other employers in pledging:

  • We fully recognize, honor, and comply with the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-Employment Rights Act (USERRA).
  • We will provide our managers and supervisors with the tools they need to effectively manage employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.
  • We appreciate the values, leadership and unique skills service members bring to the workforce and will encourage opportunities to hire Guardsmen, Reservists and Veterans.
  • We will continually recognize and support our countrys service members and their families, in peace, in crises and in war.

ESGR is a Department of Defense office that develops and promotes supportive work environments for service members in the National Guard and Reserves through outreach, recognition, and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws. ESGR also provides assistance in resolving conflicts between service members and their employers. This year ESGR celebrates 51 years of excellence in support of the Reserve Components and their civilian employers. For opportunities, call 800 336-4590 or visit
