CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Committee hosted the Charleston Area Alliance, an umbrella group of Chambers of Commerce, Kanawha Valley Leadership with an orientation flight “bosslift” April 6 at the 130th Airlift Wing, Charleston.

The leadership group consisted of 31 different employers, two volunteers of the West Virginia ESGR Committee, and Public Affairs Chief from ESGR National office. Briefing the group before the flight was Adjutant General Major Gen. William Crane of the West Virginia Army and Air National Guard, Air Wing Commander Col. Brian Preece, who was the pilot for the day. 

Also attending were several other senior leaders to welcome and talk with the group. Of the 31 employers only one participant had never been on an airplane. Her comment when asked how it was: “I loved it.”

A tour of the hangar facilities and maintenance group facilities showed the intricacies plus planning and work that goes into taking care of and maintaining the planes for future military endeavors. They also took a 5th grade science class known as “Starbase.” Starbase is a federal funded Department of Defense youth program. It incorporates fast paced and motivational curriculum with hands-activities and experiments. These experiments incorporate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) was given to this group of employers.

Finishing the day was a time for the employers to sign Statements of Support. Of the 31 employers, 26 signed Statements of Support.  Statements of Support is when employers pledge: “They fully recognize, honor and comply with the USERRA – Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act; and they will provide managers and supervisors with the tools they need to effectively manage those employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.”

ESGR, a Department of Defense (DoD) program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.  ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing an outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD. Paramount to ESGR’s mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective, and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
