MANHATTAN, Kan.—Kansas Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense program, announced Erica Christie, a supervisor with 3 Rivers, Inc. was awarded the Patriot Award in recognition of her outstanding support of a member of the Kansas National Guard.

Christie, who is a Lt. Col in the Kansas Army National Guard, was nominated by Staff Sgt. Mary Herrick a member of the 2-130 Field Artillery Battalion in Holton, Kansas.

According to Walt Frederick, ESGR State Chair, “the Patriot award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees who, like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve.  When members of the National Guard or the Reserve answer their nation’s call, the effects of their absence go beyond themselves and their immediate families. The regular full-time employers of those deployed Soldiers must account for their absence and motivate the staff left behind to cover down on duties that would otherwise be left undone.”

Herrick, who is currently deployed, said she had worked at 3 Rivers, Inc. for three years and that they were extremely supportive. She said she was notified 30 days prior to leaving for training that she was to be deployed. “I kept apologizing and they said not to worry we have your back,” she said.

The award was presented by Greg Sims, ESGR area chair, at a change of command ceremony for the 997th Brigade Support Battalion when Lt. Col. Christie was turning over command to Lt. Col. Molly Gillock.
