Doane University security supervisor honored by Department of Defense for patriotic service

CRETE, Neb. – Campus security supervisor Russ Hewitt, who is also a member of the Nebraska Army National Guard, was presented with a Patriot Award May 16 by Nick Novak and Bruce Wood, Nebraska Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve volunteers in recognition of extraordinary support of his employee serving in the Guard and Reserve.

Hewitt was nominated for being highly supportive of the Nebraska Army National Guard by his Reserve Component employee, 2nd Lt. Chris Waldron.

Waldron noted in his nomination that Hewitt has been instrumental in assisting him in his career from officer candidate school through pending deployments and future training. He stated, “He is a wonderful supervisor and someone I am proud to call a friend.”

“The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said Nick Novak, Nebraska ESGR vice chair. “Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units and it’s our pleasure to recognize Russ Hewitt with this singular award.”

ESGR, a Department of Defense program, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.
