AMES, Iowa – Iowa Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense (DoD) office, announced Jamie Lenz of Iowa State University Dining was honored Jan. 16 with a Patriot Award in recognition of extraordinary support of his employee serving in the Iowa Army National Guard.
“The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said Dick Rue, Iowa ESGR state chair. Lenz was nominated for being highly supportive of the Iowa National Guard by his Reserve Component employee, 2nd Lt. Daniel Kelly. Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units.”
Kelly was not able to be present for the presentation of the award but had many things to say about his supervisor, Jamie Lenz. "My direct supervisor, Mr. Jamie R. Lenz, is deserving recognition because he provides me a flexible work schedule that supports my time intensive involvement in the Iowa Army National Guard. Most notably, Mr. Lenz has gone to great lengths to ensure I can easily transition to Basic Officer Leaders Course, a four month resident school. Mr. Lenz often bears the burden of my absence personally and without complaint to me or others. Mr. Lenz also recognizes my involvement in the National Guard as an asset with others inside our organization and is quick to mention the skills the Army National Guard provides me to those outside of our organization. His outward support makes my involvement in the Army National Guard feel welcome and important to the success of our organization. Mr. Lenz also employs several former and retired service members who echo these same words. Mr. Lenz brings great credit to himself, Iowa State University, and the Iowa Army National Guard through his enduring support of myself and others like me. For these reasons I recommend him for the ESGR Patriot Award."
In response to his nomination Jamie said, "It is an honor and privilege to know and have the opportunity to work with Lieutenant Dan Kelly. The multiple skill sets that he has developed as part of his training in the Iowa Army National Guard are great attributes to ISU Dining. It is amazing to watch the hard work and dedication he brings to his job. Providing flexibility in the workplace is just one example of the little things we can do to show appreciation for our military personnel who enrich our lives through their service."
ESGR, a DoD office, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD. Paramount to ESGR's mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
