G4S Secure Solutions supervisor honored by Department of Defense for Patriotic Support

Sioux Falls, S.D. Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense office, announced today that Corwin Duerksen with G4S Secure Solutions was honored with a Patriot Award in recognition of extraordinary support of its employee serving in the South Dakota Guard and Reserve.

According to Ron Mielke, South Dakota ESGR State Chair, “the Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve.  Duerksen was nominated by Army Specialist Brandon Wittrock, 235th Military Police of Sioux Falls, for being highly supportive of the Army National Guard by his Reserve Component employee. Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units.”

Wittrock nominated Duerksen for having to deal with the difficulty in finding someone to replace him for his shifts.  Whether it is for his weekend drill, his two week annual training, or his deployment, he knows this can be stressful at times.  Through all of this, Duerksen has always been very supportive of his Guard duty.  Often times for a National Guard soldier and his/her unit to be successful, one weekend a month and two weeks a year are not enough. Additional individual training or unit training exercises are sometimes required to accomplish the mission. Wittrock returned in December 2013 after a nine month deployment to Afghanistan.

Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense operational committee, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD. Paramount to ESGR's mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
