The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Employee Recognition & Awards Ceremony was held today at the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Training Academy in Billerica MA. Many awards were presented for outstanding performance, officers of the year and longevity. This year another award was added to the agenda of the ceremony, the ESGR Patriot Award.

The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve. Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units.

Seven leaders were recognized for their support of employees who serve in the nation’s reserve forces. Three different “citizen warriors” submitted the Patriot Award nominations.

SPC Ducakis Germain of the Army National Guard(ARNG) submitted nominations for Sheriff Peter Koutoujian, Special Sheriff Scott Brazis, Assistant Superintendant Desiree Lashley and Captain Michael Nionakis. Deputy David Ellison and Captain Tom Gannon were nominated by SPC Nguyen Duc of the ARNG. SPC Eric DeBeaucourt, also of the ARNG, nominated Captain Tom Dennehy. SPC DUC and DeBeaucourt were unavailable due to military obligations and Assistant Superintendant Desiree Lashley was also unavailable to accept her award which will be presented at a later date.

Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve is a Department of Defense office established in 1972 to develop and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service. ESGR advocates relevant initiatives, recognizes outstanding support, increases awareness of applicable laws, and resolves conflict between service members and employers. Paramount to ESGR's mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce. The MA ESGR has more than 60 volunteers dedicated to helping every "Citizen Warrior." On hand representing MA ESGR were Vice Chair Earl Bonett, and Program Support Technician Bill Hebert.
